Rikkyo University was founded in 1874 as the Rikkyo School. Today, 149 years later, the university retains its tradition of an education modelled on the Western traditional liberal arts college.

The university has around 20,000 students based on 2 campuses, the historic Ikebukuro campus and the start of the art Niiza campus.

Choosing your modules

You will need to gain the following credits from your modules: 

  • 12 to 16 Japanese credits per semester
  • 24 to 32 Japanese credits per year

Rikkyo University offers international students accommodation in 5 dormitories which are provided by external contractors.

All the rooms are single and furnished. Prices vary and the fees will be charged per semester.

Additional costs

This information is about additional costs of studying at this host university. Please be aware that prices are subject to change, and the list may not be exhaustive.

Students are required to pay into:

  • Japanese National Insurance: this costs approximately 20,000 JPY per year
  • Gakkensai (personal accident insurance): this costs approximately 1,000 JPY per year
  • Futai-Gakuso (comprehensive insurance): this costs approximately 1,860 JPY per year

Students who decide to stay in RIR Shiinamachi accommodation are required to purchase a meal plan, covering breakfast and dinner. The fee for this accommodation including meal plan is 570,000 JPY for Semester 1, and 420,000 JPY for Semester 2.

Average monthly living cost:

  • Rent and utilities: JPY 55,000
  • Food: JPY 27,000
  • Books and other school supplies: JPY 8,000
  • Healthcare: JPY 2, 000
  • Transportation: JPY 5,000
  • Mobile phone/Internet fees: JPY 8,000

Full payment for accommodation is due prior to arrival in Japan.

Visas

Please make sure you have an up to date passport that expires no earlier than 6 months after you intend to return.

You will be provided with guidance and documentation from the partner university but it will be your responsibility to obtain the correct visa. Neither the Study Abroad team here or at the partner university are qualified to offer consultations or detailed advice regarding visa applications.
