Our leadership and governance

The University’s work is governed by our Board of Governors and managed by our Vice Chancellor and Executive Board. Together they provide strategic leadership and direction to ensure our work aligns with the University’s vision, mission, and values.

Leading the University, setting our strategic direction, and ensuring we meet our legal and financial responsibilities is vital to the success of our community, and the wider contribution we make.

This work is overseen by our Board of Governors. Members of the Board of Governors come from many different backgrounds. They are appointed because together their skills, insight, and experience enable them to constructively hold the University to account.

Governors help to ensure the University works in the best interests of students, makes financially and socially responsible decisions, and operates in accordance with the rules and legal duties set by our regulator (the Office for Students), the government, the Charity Commission, and other relevant bodies. Together, our Governors are the stewards of the mission and purpose of the University.

Our Vice Chancellor is Professor Karen Bryan. Professor Bryan has overall leadership responsibility for the operational running of the University.

Professor Bryan is supported by a small, senior team called our Executive Board. Executive Board members manage the different academic Schools and professional services that teach and support students, carry out research, contribute to the wider community, and enable the University to run effectively.
